Default Always show nearby names in PvE (ON/OFF checkmark)

(You would be able to turn this on, or off, like the PvP version. This wouldn't be by default.)

This would make playing a prot monk much easier, in PvE. When playing prot you don't use the party list, you must look at the field.

But it's really difficult for me to select the right person when there are so many glowy animations. In PvP I'm OK because I can see nearby names. But in PvE I always end up selecting the wrong person, even clicking the enemy or objects by mistake.

Hopefully this would be easy to implement, since the code is already there for PvP.

There are hotkeys available for everything you just described. There you go, your wish is granted To be honest, I think seeing a cluster of names when i don't need them would be a major pain.

Taping the control and alt keys down is a very inelegant solution however.
I too would like an option to always have names displayed. Although I'm pretty sure there's a thread on this already, however it is quite old.

Yes, I've tried the hotkeys before, but do you know how big a delay it takes to cycle through each teammate, or to think "Oh. wait.. he's number... ermm... oh, number 5". When you team up with PUGS all the time, you don't remember who is who. And in PVE, people don't reorder the team like in PVP.

I like to click people, and use skills with the keyboard. If I was a skill clicker, then the keyboard hotkeys might work for me. But it's redundant to use the keyboard to select AND use skills. Very slow and ineffective.

Yeah... what I do now is hold ALT down. But it makes my monking slower, because my hands are tied down. My hand becomes a bit inflexible and it starts hurting.

If the option upsets you... you could turn it off, like you can with PVP names :-) It wouldn't become an inconvenience to you.

I'm pretty sure there's a thread on this already, however it is quite old.
I did a search, and was surprised not to see one!

If you are complaining that you can't see party members health and you "hate" using the party list then that's your own loss, that's what PvE monking IS, get used to it or don't monk. And there is no problem with you holding down Alt and selecting the bars you want to heal. Just l2p.

If it's already a feature in pvp, then I don't understand why they shouldn't implement it in pve. And if it's an option that can be turned off, I really don't understand where the flaming/hate is coming from ><.
I don't monk often, but even I would find it useful to see who is where without having to hold alt all the time and strain my hand muscles
so /signed ^^

No, not the health. You can see it when you hover the character, so that's OK.
When a warrior, for example, is rushing for a mob, I want to click him and give him a prot. Or that sneaky mesmer squishy rushes ahead and is going to get POUNDED. I want to click him quick and give him a big prot so he doesn't insta-die.

I play prot, not heal. Like I said, I can PvP monk just fine with the nearby names turned on, but in PvE, there are so many monsters and glowy animations going on at once, that I get frazzled/headache, and keep clicking the wrong person.. or even enemies, and end up protting myself by accident :P

OP should come back to pvp and leave pve alone if it gives headaches <3

I never have problems protting I just keep an eye on the environment while my mouse stays on party list at all times.

I do however see no problem with this being added to the game but after all these years what can you expect, anet doesn't have time for this.

So don't turn this option on.

I wouldn't use it, but /signed as long as it's a toggleable option.

wait, you think that the already ample Hotkey options are still not enough? Being able to simply click1-12, tab, alt, party menu... That's not including the characters name bars above their heads, sounds like you need to look at your own playing as the root of this issue. Perhaps you have to reconfigure your UI. Short of anet implementing an auto tab to the person needing health, there is nothing else you should need.

That's exactly what I'm saying. I don't want to use hotkeys. I use my fingers for activating skills.

Like I said, I get headaches because of all the animations going on at once. In PVP that's not an issue for me. Your team, and the enemy's team, usually are very well spread out, so I can easily click the character I need. Even better, I have the option to always show nearby names, without holding down Alt key.

In PvE everyone is always bunched up, your screen is like New Year's fireworks. You (I?) can't see who's who. Or what's an enemy or my team mate. So unless I hold down the Alt key, which hurts my wrist, and thumb (small hands), it's very difficult for me to select the character I need.
I already have a good UI set-up, which I change depending on what profession I'm playing.

Just because I don't play like you do it doesn't mean my needs are any less reasonable. Specially when the function is already in place, it just needs to be applied to PvE.

So what is being proposed?

3 tick-boxes:
1. Show all allies in earshot
2. Show all party members in earshot
3. Show all red-dots in earshot

Is that what you want?

Always highlight party member's names in explorable areas.

There is still another possibility available to you, perhaps not ideal, but very easy to configure. Try mapping the function to a different key. My suggestion would be mapping to the middle mouse button. If all else fails, turn to a resource you may have ignored, Texmod. Why not just highlight friendly players using texmod to chance color, add larger icons above your team mates, anything. You have the opportunity if such a mod doesn't exist, to help other players.

I need to click on the words themselves The Big Wammo [Lulz], for example, because when I try to click the character itself, sometimes I will click a different thing, and end up casting a prot on myself
A texmod (an icon above the players health? is that how you meant? How would you do it?) would add even more visual clutter to my screen, and would not make me click the right thing.

I know I can map to other buttons, but the thing is, it hurts having to hold a key down all the time. Otherwise I would down ALT. I've tried shift, the ~ key too. I have small hands, it's difficult holding a key and casting skills. My pinky, thumb, will feel like a "shock" all the way to my wrist, then it will feel sore for days. That means I should not do that.
I don't push down a button on my mouse all the time (even when I pvp) because of battery usage, and ... pain :P

Since the option is there, it wouldn't be too difficult to implement it for pve, hopefully.

One other idea, and this is just because it sounds like prehaps its not so much a game issue as an equipment issue and physical pain might be to look into something like this. They are a bit more ergonomic and it seems that you have discomfort playing in general due to something out of your control. these are viable options and if you are really that into gaming, its a worthwhile investment. Just a suggestion that might give you real help in a quick manner rather then hoping for some changes to the game. As far as Texmod, look it up on the wiki. There are loads of great mods already available that help the monk in a group out immensely. Sorry you have to endure physical pain to play, hopefully this helps a bit.

I'm not spending cash when the pve interface lacks something pvp interface has. I have no pain playing pvp as a monk.
